WHEREAS a request that armorial hearings be granted has been received from the University Club of Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Incorporated on the 8th day of November 1907 by Letters Patent of the Lieutenant- Governor of Quebec, and on the 5th day of June 1974 under the Companies Act of the province of Quebec,

 

AND WHEREAS a Warrant has been issued by the Deputy Herald Chancellor authorizing this grant,

  

NOW KNOW YOU that the pursuant to the authority vested in His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada, to exercise the armorial prerogative of Her Majesty The Queen of Canada, and to the terms of my Commission of Office, I, the Chief Herald of Canada, do by these Presents grant and assign To the UNIVERSITY CLUB OF MONTREAL, to the following Arms: Per bend sinister serpentine Gules and Or, a yellow birch tree eradicated counterchanged; And for a Crest: An owl rising Or perched on a mortarboard Azure; And for Motto:  SPERARE OPTIMUM, meaning ‘’Hope for the best’’, And for Supporters: Two unicorns Or crined and Unglued Gules each gorged with a coronet Azure of maple leaves Gules and fleurs-de-lis Azure and standing on a grassy mount set with grape vines fructed and leaved and poppy flowers proper; And for a Flag: A banner of the Arms; And for Badge: On a torteau environed by a wreath of conifer branches, a unicorn’s head couped, all ensigned by a coronet of maple leaves and fleurs-de-lis Or;

 

AS THE SAME are depicted in the painting herewith provided and entered In Volume VI, page 116 of the Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges of Canada to be borne and used for ever hereafter by the University CLUB OF MONTREAL, all according to the Law of Arms of Canada.

 

Given under my hand and the seal of the Canadian Heraldic Authority at Rideau Hall in the City of Ottawa this fifteenth day of March in the year Two thousand and twelve.“
